Tanzania — where the Serengeti goes on forever.

Tanzania's national parks are among the most pristine in Africa. The Serengeti is home to the largest land migration on earth, the Ngorongoro Crater holds an extraordinary concentration of wildlife in a single caldera, and Tarangire dazzles with ancient baobabs and elephant herds.

About the Northern Circuit

Three parks worth knowing.

The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 km² of open savannah — one of the oldest and most intact ecosystems on earth. It hosts the Great Migration, the largest terrestrial mammal movement in the world, in which 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebra circle the ecosystem annually. River crossings at the Grumeti and Mara rivers, typically July to October, rank among the most dramatic wildlife spectacles anywhere.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera stretching 260 km², home to roughly 25,000 animals including one of East Africa's densest lion populations and the endangered black rhino. Animals rarely leave the crater floor, so a single day's descent yields extraordinary wildlife density — and the views from the rim at dawn are exceptional.

Tarangire National Park is the northern circuit's best-kept secret. Giant baobab trees dot the landscape, and during the dry season the Tarangire River draws the largest elephant concentration in northern Tanzania — sometimes several hundred animals at a single waterhole. It is also one of East Africa's best parks for ground birds, from ostrich to the secretary bird.

Tanzania and Kenya share one continuous ecosystem. The Mara–Serengeti is a single wilderness divided by a border — wildebeest cross freely between both nations. Kikwetu offers combined Kenya–Tanzania itineraries starting in Nairobi: a morning in the Masai Mara, then a light-aircraft connection to the Serengeti. One trip, two countries, two landscapes.

The best time for Tanzania's northern circuit is the dry season, June to October. January to March — the calving season on the southern Serengeti — is equally extraordinary: over 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day at peak, and predator action around the calving grounds is intense and constant.

Kikwetu builds Tanzania packages from Nairobi — convenient for onward connections, no need to route via Dar es Salaam. We manage cross-border logistics, park fees, and Serengeti accommodation in the central, western, or northern zones depending on where the migration sits during your travel dates.
