Balloon safari — above it all.
There is no finer way to see the Masai Mara than from a hot air balloon at sunrise. Drifting silently above the golden plains, watching wildlife move beneath you as the African sun rises — it is a memory that lasts a lifetime.
Your balloon morning.
A morning you will never forget.
The Masai Mara balloon safari is one of Kenya's most celebrated experiences — and justifiably so. At 300 metres above the savannah, the scale of the Mara becomes visible in a way no game drive can convey. Herds of wildebeest stretch to the horizon. Elephants move silently through acacia thickets. Lions rest on kopjes in the cool morning air. You watch it all in complete silence, broken only by the occasional burst of the burner overhead.
The flight departs before sunrise. You'll leave camp around 5:30am while the sky is still dark and star-filled, and the Mara is alive with the pre-dawn sounds of hyena and nightjar. Watching the balloon inflate against the fading dark is itself a memorable moment. As you lift off, the plains turn orange and then gold as the sun rises over the Oloololo Escarpment.
The flight lasts approximately one hour and follows the wind, drifting slowly over the reserve. The pilot navigates the balloon gently — descending to treetop height for close animal encounters, then rising higher to reveal the full panorama. After landing, wherever the wind takes you, a ground crew meets the balloon and sets up a champagne breakfast in the middle of the Mara: proper tables, linen, and a full cooked breakfast with views to match.
Balloon safaris operate year-round, weather permitting. The best conditions — clear skies, short grass, and spectacular wildlife below — are during the dry season from July to October, when the Great Migration is in full flow. January to March is also excellent, with green landscapes and quieter mornings.
Kikwetu adds a balloon safari as an optional upgrade to any Masai Mara itinerary. The cost is approximately $450–$550 per person, including the flight, champagne bush breakfast, and a signed flight certificate. We make the booking on your behalf once Mara dates are confirmed, using a preferred operator with a strong safety record and experienced pilots.
Practical tips: wear warm layers (the Mara is cold before dawn even in the warm months), bring a wide-angle lens, and be prepared for a bumpy landing — it is safe but not smooth. Minimum age is typically 7 years. Basket compartments seat 2–4 passengers, so couples and small family groups are naturally together throughout the flight.
